Make Medicare Easyclaim Hassle-Free: Cards That Work (and Don’t)

With Tyro Health EFTPOS and Medicare Easyclaim, your patients can receive their Medicare rebate instantly, right at the point of care. No waiting, no extra admin, just a smoother experience for everyone.1

Here’s a simple guide to help your practice understand how Easyclaim works, who’s eligible, and how to make it a seamless part of your front desk workflow.

What is Medicare Easyclaim?

Medicare Easyclaim is used for Medicare bulk billing and patient claiming. It is a service that lets patients receive their Medicare rebate almost instantly after paying for their appointment. Instead of waiting days for funds, the rebate appears in their account within seconds.

Easyclaim works in real time through an Easyclaim-enabled EFTPOS device and Medicare’s claiming system. It’s simple to adopt and requires minimal training. You can use it 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Understanding Bulk Billing vs. Patient Claims

Medicare supports two main types of claims:

  • Bulk billing: The patient doesn’t pay upfront and there are no out-of-pocket costs for them. The provider bills Medicare directly and accepts the Medicare benefit as full payment.
  • Patient paid claims: The patient pays the full fee at the time of consult. The claim is submitted, and Medicare pays the benefit back to the patient’s bank account.

These claim types can be submitted through two main channels:

  • Medicare Online: Submitted via your practice management software or Tyro Health Online, with rebates usually paid within 1–2 business days.
  • Easyclaim: Submitted via an Easyclaim-enabled EFTPOS terminal. For fully paid patient claims, the rebate is deposited into the patient’s bank account instantly (if an eftpos-enabled debit card is used). Part-paid, unpaid, and bulk bill claims can also be processed on Easyclaim, but rebates for these aren’t instant.

How the Rebate Process Works

  • The patient pays the full fee at the time of the consult. They can use any card, digital wallet, or cash.
  • Your practice processes the Medicare claim via a Tyro Health CounterTop or Mobile EFTPOS terminal.1
  • The rebate is deposited instantly into the patient’s bank account (if they use an eftpos-enabled debit card). For most patients, this happens within seconds.

Which Cards Work (and Which Don’t)

To avoid delays or cancelled claims, always check card eligibility before processing the payment and starting the claim:

Eligible cards

  • eftpos-enabled debit cards (look for the eftpos logo on the front or back)
  • Dual-network debit cards (with both eftpos + Visa, or eftpos + Mastercard® logos)
  • Digital wallet cards (Apple Pay, Google Pay, etc.), if the physical card they’re linked to is eftpos-enabled.

Not eligible

  • Credit cards
  • International payment cards

Tip: Always check that the patient’s card supports eftpos before processing the payment and starting the claim. A quick check upfront avoids cancellations and saves valuable time for your team.

Practical Tips for Your Reception Team

Your reception team are the front line in making Easyclaim smooth and stress-free. Here are some simple ways they can help patients claim with confidence:

  • Ask early: Before processing payment, ask: “Does your card support eftpos?”
  • Check physical cards: Look for the eftpos logo to confirm eligibility.
  • Check digital wallets: Remind patients to check their card settings in Apple or Google Wallet to make sure the eftpos network is available.
  • Avoid rework: Confirming card eligibility upfront saves time and avoids having to cancel and redo transactions.
  • Reassure patients: Let them know their rebate will usually appear in their account within seconds (if they’ve used an eftpos-enabled debit card)
